Vehicles

There are many types of vehicles that can be written with our partner carriers Motorcycle programs – and not just motorcycles! In addition to Harley-Davidson, cruisers, touring bike and sport bike motorcycles, our carriers also cover all-terrain vehicles (ATVs), golf carts and low-speed vehicles, snowmobiles, scooters, mopeds, side-by-side utility task vehicles (UTVs), Segways and more. In most states, you can even cover golf carts or ATVs that have been converted for legal road use.

Autocycles, personal transporters, NEVs/LSVs, alternative three-wheelers and eBikes are not yet eligible in California. There are some vehicles we are unable to place, such as three-wheeled ATVs, go-carts and dune buggies. Check your eligibility guide for more details on eligible vehicles.

If you are unsure, carrier manual will offers detailed photos and descriptions to help you choose the correct model type when quoting to reduce the amount of time spent calling underwriting or checking your product guide.

For certain types of vehicles, physical damage coverage may not available; For example:

  • Customized bikes with more than $20,000 in custom equipment
  • Homemade kit bikes
  • Custom choppers
  • Limited production cruisers over $40,000 in value
  • Dune buggies and sand rails

If one of these general rules prevents you from quoting physical damage coverage, you may still be able to issue the policy as liability only.

In some cases, if you want to quote physical damage coverage for motorcycles, the manufacturer has to be an available choice in the carrier’s quote system. If the manufacturer is not available, you may be able to get the policy bound with underwriting assistance.

Target market

Our motorcycle target market includes experienced drivers with good driving records who own cruisers such as Harley-Davidsons, adventure bikes, scramblers and touring bikes. Sport bikes may be acceptable with Progressive or Dairyland.

With most carriers, the applicant can qualify for a better premium if the named operator is over 25 years old, has a good insurance score (in states where credit is used) and has three or more years’ experience owning or insuring motorcycles or off-road vehicles in the last five years.

Harley-Davidson alone accounts for 30% of all new motorcycle sales in the U.S., and the median age of motorcycle riders is 45, so a large segment of the street motorcycle market fits into nearly all of our carrier’s appetites.

Operators
  • With most carriers, operators must be at least 14 years old for off-road vehicles and 16 years old for vehicles licensed for street use
  • Must live in the household
  • Must have a U.S. or Canadian driver’s license

While we can accommodate drivers who have driving activity, we consider major violations, at-fault accidents and multiple minor violations in our eligibility decisions. Check carrier manuals for eligibility details.

Vehicle use

Generally, to be eligible for a motorcycle policy, your client must be driving the vehicle for personal use only. Business and commercial activities are typically not permitted. Moreover, our carriers don’t normally insure vehicles rented or leased to others, or vehicles used for racing or other speed contests.

Quoting

  • The Basics of Quoting

We make it easy for our members to quote motorcycle insurance. Each member will be provided access to our online comparative rating platform offered through PL Rating®. Even if you don’t yet have your own carrier credentials, you will be able to quote in PL Rating and refer quotes to underwriting to receive a bindable proposal for your insured.

PL Rating will allow your to quote auto, home, condo, renters, dwelling fire as well as motorcycle. All required fields are clearly marked. For the most accurate quote – and to avoid surprises later for you and your customer – ensure all fields and data are as complete as possible.

If you have carrier credentials, you can always go directly into the carrier to quote your risk.

    Pro-Tip:

Presently there is not connectivity from PL Rating to the policy system (NowCerts). When you complete a quote, you’ll also want to login to NowCerts to add the prospect under your account. This will help in matching any policy issued to your customer for accounting, future service and system access. Always input the name, address, and contact information the same as you do in PL Rating or the carriers systems to guaranty accurate matching during the nightly policy download from the insurance companies.

    Notable quoting tips:

    • Use one of the templates already completed to more efficiently create a quote. If you want to create your own templates, simply navigate to the Admin tab in PL Rating and select manage templates. You can create specific templates for each line of business.
    • Eligible discounts are applied automatically based on information you have entered.
    • PL Rating will make it easy to quote bundles, so consider getting all the information and get all your quotes done in one session.
  • Comparative Raters

Because we represent multiple carriers, we know that a comparative rater is the best tool for shopping auto insurance. As part of your membership we provide you access to PL Rating. However, once you get your carrier credentials you are free to use any comparative rater you choose. Note: ITC TurboRater has a direct integration with our policy management system, and there is a workaround if you use EZLynx. Contact marketing if you need assistance.

Best practices for using comparative raters
    • If available, use rater prefills to ease your workflow, but be mindful of unique customer attributes.
    • Be specific when quoting Occupation and Education (where permitted by state). Selecting values such as Other may not give you an accurate rate.
    • Some raters prefill the effective date with today’s date. If quoting for the future, set the effective dates in the future to take advantage of all available discounts (outside CA), unless the customer needs the coverage today.
    • Multi-policy discounts may be worded as package, multi-policy or companion depending on the rater.
    • Some carriers return quotes with discounts they are encouraging your to sell (eg. multi-policy or telematics). Make sure you remove them or get the final bindable quote from the carrier before you present it to the insured.

The more accurate the quote, the less follow–up work will be needed once you or your underwriter are in the carrier system. Accurate data will provide a better customer experience with a quote that represents the best solution to the insured’s insurance needs.

Things to remember post bridging from a rater to the carrier:

If you set defaults in carrier system or your rater to help with quoting efficiency, remember:

    • If you set defaults the rater, the carrier system may override those values;
    • Some default options in a rater may lead to selecting something you don’t intend. It’s best to avoid relying on defaults in the rater that are not coverage-related.

The bottom line: When you are diligent about gathering and entering your customer’s complete information up front – whether in the carrier system or the comparative rater – you’ll save time and potential frustration later. Relying too much on pre-filled information or skipping steps may lead to an inaccurate quote for the coverage your customer needs.

  • Tips for Accurate Quotes

Our carriers offer various resources and reminders to help guide you in quoting and selling their products. Below are the basic themes from all these tools to help you get the most accurate quote.

    Auto Insurance Quote Tips

  • Adding Violations and Accidents

As you gather information, you’ll indicate reportable accidents either in the comparative rater or carrier systems. If you don’t have the exact accident information, such as the date, input whatever activity info that the customer discloses to you. However, be sure to explain to them that the information needs to be verified and that their insurance quote is subject to change.

Activity information required varies by state. For specific state requirements, refer to the Accidents & Violations section of the carrier underwriting manual.

Order Reports in the carrier systems

To aid you in presenting an accurate quote to your customer, you can order an MVR and CLUE report within the carrier systems. Incident information from the reports is automatically transferred to the application. Before issuing the policy, compare and reconcile reports against the driving activity information you previously entered. (See section on MVR chargebacks)

    MVR Ordering

    Modifying or deleting incidents

During the quoting process you may choose to delete incidents returned on the reports – if proper documentation is provided (such as a letter of experience from a prior carrier or a policy report) most carriers allow this. You can also modify or delete incidents in certain situations:

    Problem with incident from CLUE

    Permitted action

Driver listed on the CLUE report is incorrect

    Change to other listed driver

Driver is no longer in household

Change to driver out of household

No Fault on part of insured driver

Change to No Fault (allowed for some, but not all claims)

Vehicle not owned by insured at time of loss

    Delete claim

    Claim payment higher

Agent may increase an amount of claim payment but may not decrease amount

For conviction date states only (CA, CO, IN, MI, NV, NY, NC), the listed incident of same date has higher surcharge point

    Delete incident

    Note:

    • Documentation is not required for all CLUE-reconciled accidents, only those deleted during the quoting process. It’s possible documentation may be requested during the reconciliation/review  process after issuance of the policy if information on the reports is inconsistent with listed activity.
    • With most carriers, customers can correct any driving records by contacting LexisNexis at (888) 260-3652
  • Getting a Bindable Quote
Tips to help get a bindable quote

For members still in the initiation period, or if you require the assistance of our underwriting team. We make getting a bindable quote easy. However, you need to remember, this is a two-way-street and we can only provide you quick service when you provide all the information. Below are some tips for assuring that you get a fast turn-around on your new submission service request:

    • Make sure you input you clients information in PL Rating (personal lines) or Insureon (commercial lines) before you reach out to your underwriter for assistance.
    • If you’ve made assumptions in your PL Rating or Insureon quote, please let you underwriter know when you send in the service request.
    • If you have supporting documents, like a signed application or photos, include those with the service request.
    • Submit a New Quote Service request form. This will create a tracking ticket and keep your request on-track.
    • If your request has a special priority, include that in the form comments and we will do our best to accommodate.
  • MVR Chargebacks

The IronPoint Agent MVR Chargeback program

While IronPoint is subject to MVR chargebacks from the various carriers, we presently do not pass those cost through to our members.

We presently do not do this because our members have been responsible with MVR and CLUE orders, and chargeback expenses have been reasonable. This is subject to change, however. We will continue to monitor MVR and CLUE chargeback expenses, and if they get above our tolerance, we will institute a program to recover these expenses.

    Keeping our costs low

Responsibly managing MVR and CLUE ordering is essential to offsetting the cost of underwriting report chargeback costs. You can reduce or even eliminate the amount of chargeback IronPoint recieves monthly by only ordering reports on quotes where you believe you have a reasonable chance of issuing the policy. Where possible, we recommend this process:
